Input from the Arctic Industry

The Commission should recognise economic activity in the Arctic as a security enabler for the EU and Norway and for local ripple effects. Sustained settlement, employment and industrial activity in North Norway are essential to the Arctic and sustainable societies. This factors is the main course for resilience, as well as structural surveillance and emergency preparedness. These factors contribute to strengthening Norway’s and its allies’ situational awareness and to supporting NATO and EU efforts to safeguard shared interests in the High North.

The energy industry in the Arctic is vital for all the society all over North Norway.

The Commission should reflect in the revised Arctic Policy that the Norwegian part of the Arctic that is open for energy activities both onshore and offshore, the activity are governed by well-established and comprehensive environmental and oceanic management plans and governance. These plans are based on scientific ecosystem data, updated on a regular basis and grounded in broad democratic processes.   All the energy activity in the Arctic is coordinated and co-exciting both with fisheries and the sami-people.
